4 Points in a week, looking forward to Palm Beach game.

Here is the much awaited game reports on the two games last week.

To start with, we earned 4 points! One draw and a win is a great win and lifts us from amongst the cellar dwellers.

Last Thursday we played the rescheduled game against Pacific Pines. This was a night game and the boys responded very well to playing under the lights at 7.30pm at night. They played with enthusiasm and energy and took control of our fair share of possession including aerial balls. Considering night football is still a couple of years away for these guys, they have much to look forward to.

As with many previous games, we continued to have more than our fair share of shots on goals and possession in the opposition half. Danny and Andrew managed to find the back of the net. At the other end of the park, Nick made some spectacular saves in goals and Scott as a defender saved one on the line to ensure we took home a point. Bryce, Danny and Callum performed well in the front. Bradley, Nick, Andrew and Troy did the hard yards in the middle of the park and Lian, Scott, James and Ray were solid in defence. Jalen and Aaron entered the field during the game to contribute in very positive ways during the game. End result Pacific Pines 2 Coomera 2.

Two days later, we travelled to Burleigh Heads for a Saturday morning game. I was a bit concerned that the boys appeared a little sluggish and tired and two boys were nursing niggling ‘flu symptoms. This was always going to be a difficult contest as both Burleigh Heads and Coomera had managed to score a number of games and up to that point not taken the full three points in any game. I knew that they were capable of scoring but on paper, they should have been beatable.

The boys struck out well in the first half and continued to do what I had asked them to do. We had worked for a number of weeks on getting away early shots on goals and longer shots. We had also worked on commanding the aerial balls to control clearances. This practice paid off with a large number of goals on target for the game.

With the number of shots and possession, it was only a matter of time before a number of the shots would find the net. Congratulations to Bryce, Callum, Danny and Andrew who added to our goal scoring tally. But every goal started with possession from the midfield and backs. I want to highlight the efforts of our part time goalies Bradley, Jalen, Nick, Aaron and Troy. Bradley is our most regular goalie and has been very solid in the role.

Our backs have featured Ray, James, Aaron, Scott, Bradley, Nick and Zach who have provided stoic defence and also moved up field in times of attacking moves.

Our midfield of Lian, Andrew, Troy, James, Nick and Bradley have a hard job to do to support both defence and attack. They were also critical in ensuring that we take command of the midfield.

Our forward pack of Bryce, Danny, Aaron, Callum and others on a part-time basis finished off the shots on goals.

Final score Coomera 4 Burleigh Heads 2

My assessment is that to this point, player for player we have a more consistent and quality team than any of the other teams. The better teams tend to have a couple of starry players who are dominant, fast and dangerous. With a bit of strategic defence we can frustrate these players. We need to continue to shoot and score goals and we will win our fair share of games.

Thanks to Ray and his family for bringing the oranges. They go down really well!!

This week’s game is against Palm Beach. Game kicks off at 9.40am at Coomera 2. Please be there at 9am.

I have updated the games draw and leader board.
